Ho Municipal Hospital honoured as Volta’s best for 2018

Ho Municipal Hospital has been adjudged the best health facility in the Volta Region at the Ghana Health Service (GHS) 2018 regional peer review conference.

Dr Lawrence Kumi, Medical Director of the Hospital was praised for his “prudent management of scarce resources”, which transformed the facility from a death dungeon to a health facility of choice.

Established in 1927, the Ho Municipal Hospital served as the Volta Regional hospital until the new facility for the region was built in 1999.

Dr Kumi took over the reins of the hospital’s management in 2013, and inherited crucial sectors including the surgical theatre, labour ward and psychiatric centres all in a deplorable state.

The facility at the time had no emergency unit with the new management marshalling resources to upgrade the theatre, built an emergency unit, and a mothers’ lodge.

“Despite all the difficulties, the Medical Director took the bull by the horn to mobilise all managers and staff including those rejected in other facilities to move the facility to its current enviable state with unique ideas and great leadership skills”, a citation presented to the management read.

The hospital has for three years running recorded zero maternal mortalities, significant reduction in neonatal, infant, and under-five mortality, with reduction in still births.

Special clinics of the facility were overhauled, and staff discipline fine-tuned.

Mr Anthony Dzadzra, Council Member of the GHS who presented the citation at the 2018 Regional Health Sector Performance Review Conference in Ho, said the Council had identified needed interventions towards improving health delivery, and gave the assurance that pressing challenges would be addressed.

Dr Kumi, receiving the citation, thanked management and staff for their support, and added that, the recognition would serve as a lasting motivation to drive the facility to continue delivering the best in healthcare.
